Mental Health Awareness Month at VITALIA®

Mental Health Awareness Month was originally celebrated in 1949. That was 73 years ago! The goals of the sponsoring organization, originally the National Committee for Mental Hygiene (now Mental Health America), were to improve attitudes toward mental health/illness, improve services for mental health clients, and promote mental health.

Older adults are more at risk for depression because they are no longer able to do things as they used to; they are less independent. Older adults also can feel fatigued and have decreased energy which can cause depression as well.

Potential signs of mental health distress in seniors can be increased confusion, social withdrawal, changes in weight, memory loss, increased fatigue, changes in sleeping and eating patterns, loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities, and a feeling of worthlessness.

It is important to attend to mental health just like you would physical health because declining mental health can cause physical health to decline as well. Depression can lead to neglect of daily activities and transfers, but also can affect an individual’s diabetes and heart condition.
