First impressions begin before someone walks through the front door. From the landscaping and building exterior to the lighting, cleanliness, and overall appearance, every detail tells a story. A well-maintained community helps residents, families, and visitors feel welcomed, comfortable, and confident in their surroundings.
At Vitalia Stow, I believe choosing a senior living community is about much more than finding a place to live. It is about finding a place that could become home for the rest of someone’s life.
Residents and families bring a lifetime of hard work, accomplishments, and memories to this decision. They deserve a community where they feel welcomed, valued, and confident about the years ahead.
That is why every detail matters, from the appearance of our property to the warmth of our team members.

For me, being truly tour-ready means creating an environment that reflects the care, hospitality, and respect our residents deserve.
It goes beyond keeping the building clean. Common areas should feel inviting, team members should be engaged, and residents should feel comfortable and at home.
My standard is simple. If we would not be proud to welcome our own families into a space, then it is not tour-ready.
Maintaining that level of care requires a consistent approach. At Stow, we use a zone-based maintenance schedule to ensure every part of the community receives attention.
Each week, we focus on a different area. We might address the first floor one week, the second floor the next, and the third floor after that.
During the fourth week, we concentrate on common areas and less frequently visited spaces, including stairwells.
This rotation helps us identify wall, trim, door, and paint concerns before they accumulate. It also ensures smaller spaces are not overlooked while we maintain high-traffic areas.
Landscaping is another important part of creating a positive first impression. We work closely with our contracted landscaping provider to evaluate the property and identify opportunities for improvement.
Arrow Senior Living’s landscaping contract provides guidance and consistency, while our landscaper helps determine when plants or outdoor areas need more than routine maintenance.
Lighting also contributes to both appearance and safety. Inside the building, consistent color temperature and appropriate brightness help create a comfortable atmosphere.
Well-lit hallways, stairwells, and common areas also support visibility as residents move throughout the community.
Outside, lighting helps give our property a grand, welcoming appearance after dark. I want someone driving through the community in the evening to feel the same sense of comfort and confidence they would during the day.
One of our most meaningful First Impressions successes at Stow began with a resident who wanted to help improve our courtyard.
We are fortunate to have residents who enjoy getting involved and contributing their ideas. During a conversation, one resident expressed an interest in taking on an outdoor project.
He also mentioned that his grandson was working toward becoming an Eagle Scout and needed a project opportunity.
Together, we developed the idea of creating updated raised-bed planters for our courtyard.
His grandson was excited about the opportunity and recruited several fellow Scouts to help complete the project. The resident also participated alongside his grandson.
What started as a simple conversation became a wonderful opportunity for different generations to work together.
The completed planters were a beautiful addition to our courtyard, creating an inviting outdoor feature for residents to enjoy.
However, the project meant much more than improving the appearance of our community.
It allowed a resident to take an active role in shaping his home, created meaningful time between a grandfather and grandson, and helped a young man complete an important milestone on his journey to becoming an Eagle Scout.
This is an idea other Plant Operations Directors can adapt by listening to residents and exploring opportunities for community partnerships.
Residents often have wonderful ideas, talents, and connections that can help make their communities even better.
For me, first impressions are about more than how a building looks. They reflect the care we put into our surroundings and the connections that make a community feel like home.
Our courtyard project is a reminder that some of the most meaningful improvements happen when people come together with a shared purpose.
