Fall Prevention Made Simple

Category: Health & Wellness

Author: Dionna Henderson, Wellness Director

Preventing falls is an important part of helping older adults maintain their safety, confidence, and independence. While falls can happen for many reasons, simple changes to everyday routines and living spaces can help reduce common risks. Understanding potential hazards, knowing when to ask for assistance, and working together can make a meaningful difference.

At Vitalia Stow, I believe fall prevention starts with paying attention to our surroundings and taking time during everyday activities. Something as simple as rushing to the bathroom or reaching for an item that is too far away can create an unnecessary risk.

As Wellness Director, I encourage residents, families, and team members to recognize these situations and develop habits that help residents remain safe, comfortable, and independent.

Creating Safer Apartments by Keeping Essentials Within Reach

Some of the most common fall hazards in residents’ apartments include cluttered walkways, loose rugs, poor lighting, and improper footwear.

These hazards can make it difficult to move safely, especially for residents who use walkers, canes, or other assistive devices.

I encourage residents and families to keep walking paths clear and remove loose rugs whenever possible. Improving lighting can also make it easier to recognize obstacles and navigate an apartment safely.

Another concern is having frequently used belongings placed too high or too low.

When residents stretch to reach something on a shelf or bend toward the floor, they may lose their balance.

Keeping everyday essentials within easy reach can help reduce these unnecessary movements.

Items such as phones, television remotes, glasses, and hearing aids should be stored where residents can access them comfortably.

I especially encourage residents to use their glasses and hearing aids as prescribed. Being able to see and hear their surroundings clearly can help them remain aware of potential hazards.

Walkers and other recommended mobility devices should also be kept nearby and used correctly.

Families and team members can help by regularly checking apartments for safety concerns and making sure necessary equipment is available and functioning properly.

If a family member notices a change in their loved one’s balance or daily routine, sharing that observation with our Wellness team is important.

Likewise, team members can identify hazards during everyday visits and recommend simple adjustments.

The goal is to make each apartment safer while preserving the comfort and independence residents value.

Slowing Down and Making Every Step Count

Along with reducing hazards, I believe developing consistent daily habits is an important part of fall prevention.

One of the simplest habits is turning on the lights before walking, especially when getting up during the night.

Good lighting makes it easier to see furniture, flooring changes, and other obstacles that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Proper footwear is equally important. I encourage residents to avoid walking in socks without grips and instead wear supportive shoes with slip-resistant soles.

Another habit is keeping a phone or call pendant within easy reach. Residents should be able to request assistance without having to get up or move into an unsafe position.

Staying hydrated, while following any fluid recommendations from a healthcare provider, can also support overall wellness.

However, one of the most important habits I encourage is slowing down.

Residents may sometimes feel the need to hurry when answering the phone, getting out of bed, or going to the bathroom.

Rushing can make it easier to lose balance, overlook an obstacle, or forget to use a recommended mobility device.

I encourage residents to take their time when standing and pause before beginning to walk.

If a walker or cane has been recommended, it should be used consistently, even for short distances within the apartment.

Taking a few extra moments can help residents feel more secure and recognize when they may need additional assistance.

If someone suddenly begins feeling dizzy, weak, or unsteady, they should stop moving and sit down safely if possible.

They should use their pendant or call system to request assistance rather than attempting to continue walking alone.

Residents should also report these changes to the nurse, especially when symptoms are new or different from what they normally experience.

Early communication allows our nursing team to assess the concern and determine whether additional care or medical follow-up is needed.

I want residents to feel comfortable asking for assistance whenever something does not feel right.

My simplest fall-prevention tip is to slow down and avoid rushing.

Whether standing up, walking across the apartment, or heading to the bathroom, take your time and use your recommended mobility device.

Fall prevention often comes down to thoughtful daily decisions. Clear pathways, accessible belongings, appropriate footwear, and awareness of changing needs can all make a meaningful difference.
